It's absolutely true that if you eat more calories than your body needs, most of them will end up as fat cells in your body. Most people therefore conclude that if they go on a 'diet', they can change that equation, and end up losing weight. Sadly, that isn't going to work, and simplistic reasoning like this is something that our medical field loves - they don't get paid if you're health, right?
The biggest mistake people make is in the very word 'diet'. Let's face it, everyone thinks that a 'diet' is a temporary thing, and that once you've hit your goal, you can go back to eating like a pig. (Yes, that's an exaggeration - but not far off the mark!)
The very word, 'diet' - has somehow come to mean something temporary, something that is 'different' from the ordinary eating patterns. The truth is, if you want to lose weight, and stay healthy for the rest of your life, you have to totally change the way you eat, and almost certainly the way you exercise as well. Many people do too much of the former, and not enough of the latter!
Let's face it, at least in America, we've become a very sedentary people. We drive everywhere we go, and rarely walk so much as a single block in a typical day. Yet our food choices, even as historical trends have lessened our need to exert ourselves, have greatly increased in the same timeframe.
We now exercise less than ever before, and yet have the widest possible choices in food, most of which are not particularly healthy. Many people would be amazed at how much weight they would drop if they simply said 'no' to sugar... (And yes, that includes all the different varieties of processed sugar, such as 'High Fructose Corn Syrup' - found almost everywhere nowadays!)
Simply switching to nutritionally-dense foods would make a difference - but you first have to educate yourself on what is nutritionally dense, and what are simply 'empty' calories. I also personally advocate using vitamins, minerals, and well-documented aids such as Green Tea...
So revise your understanding of 'diet'. Learn about the foods you eat, and which foods you should simply say goodbye to (it's been years since I last ate a donut!). Realize that in order to lose weight - you must change the habits of a lifetime into a new set of habits, that will last you the rest of your life.
