Blueprint For a Balanced Diet

Bookmark and Share

There is still no 'one' food or magic pill that contains all the nutrients we need, so it is up to us to make sure that every day, we take in as many of the right foods in the right proportions to give our bodies all the nutrition it needs. There are up to 16 different minerals and 13 separate vitamins to maintain our proper functions and health. There is no need to ban any one type of food, but you do need to keep in mind the food pyramid so you can easily remember how much of any food group you should consume.

If you imagine that the pyramid has four distinct layers with the biggest layer on the bottom being what you should eat the most of; this layer is the carbohydrates group. Breads, potatoes cereal and grains are the main source of complex carbohydrates and will fill you up, so you will find yourself eating less of the wrong foods. Carb's are a great source of calcium, iron, B vitamins and fiber.

The next level is all the live flora; being the fruits and vegetables, this is where we get most of our vitamin C. These foods should form the backbone of your diet. They are nutrient rich and packed with folate, carotenes, vitamins and fiber. Try to eat a mix of both raw and cooked vegetables as some like tomatoes and carrots, are more beneficial cooked.

The next level is the protein level, the best lsources are from dairy and meat, moderate portions of these important foods are essential. Dairy also supplies calcium for maximum bone and teeth strength and along with meat is a large source of protein. Meat is also important for iron, zinc and B vitamins especially B12.

At the very top of the pyramid are the fatty and sugary foods. Eat the least of these foods. Try to replace butter and margarine with healthy fats like olive oil and try to satisfy your sweet tooth with fruit instead of junk food.

Easy Healthy Eating - Discover How Enjoyable and Easy Healthy Eating Can Be With 5 Amazing Tricks

Bookmark and Share

Easy - healthy eating? Anything but! Every time you open a journal, you find another story. One says: "Bananas give great energy, eat one every day!" The next one warns: "Bananas are high-sugar foods, don't eat them!" And a third one claims: "Eating bananas after 6 p.m. makes you fat." What's the truth?

I always wonder how to eat everything in one day how the crowd of experts recommends, and whom to believe when one praises and the next one bans the same food, leaving me in terrible confusion.

Finally, I came to the conclusion that it's best not to pay too much attention to all this. And I soon discovered how easy healthy eating is. There's no need to follow complicated calculations to set up your daily menu. Simply:

* eat the right foods
* vary what you eat
* drink healthy
* eat regularly
* listen to your body

Eat the right foods

Eat mainly vegetables, fruit, legumes, grains and whole grain products. Dairy products, meat, fish and eggs are healthy but contain saturated fat. Eat moderate amounts only, choose lean meat and maybe even low-fat dairy products.

Add as little sugar and fat as possible to your foods. When choosing fat, eat healthy fats rather, there are enough of them. Keep sugary and fatty foods for occasional treats.

If that's your main diet, a little treat every now and then won't harm you.

Vary what you eat

This is a very easy healthy eating strategy, and the best way to ensure that you get all nutrients you need: Simply have a wide variety of all healthy food groups.

Don't eat the same five vegetables all the time! Rather have many different ones over the course of the week. A great way of doing this is to combine several veggie types in one meal. The same goes for the other food groups: Make a fruit salad, or example, or mix different legumes in a soup or stew.

Drink healthy

Avoid beverages with sugar, colorants, flavour enhancers and preservatives. Water is best, but there are also many low-calorie beverages. When buying fruit juice, choose one that is labeled "100% fruit juice" and make sure it contains no additives. Or make your own fruit juice at home. Smoothies with low-fat milk and fresh fruit are also a great option.

Eat regularly

Another easy healthy eating trick: Have regular mealtimes. This ensures that you will never be too hungry and always have enough fuel for your body. It also prevents you from overeating or eating unhealthy foods when you get "severe hunger attacks".

Definitely have breakfast, lunch and supper, and a snack in between. Maybe you also do better with six smaller meals instead of three big ones.

Listen to your body

Trust yourself! Your body knows best what it needs, and it tells you. I'm a lazy fruit eater, but when I was pregnant I was eating fruit all the time because my body was screaming for it. If you strongly feel like having any specific healthy food, then it's likely to contain something you need now.

The secret is: eat and drink healthy things, eat in a healthy way, and trust yourself. That's how easy healthy eating is.

In fact the failure rate of people who design their own diets is very great indeed.

Wouldn't it be brilliant if you had all your meals planned out for you? How great would it be if you knew what you had to buy at the supermarket rather than having to search the shelves for something healthy, slimming and different. How to Strengthen Your Bones Without Dairy

Bookmark and Share

Thanks to clever marketing, we have been lead to believe that without consuming dairy products, we would not get our daily recommended calcium intake. If this is the case, why is it that in the UK osteoporosis:

•Affects nearly three million people and costs the NHS more than £2.3billion per year (£6m daily)
•One in two women and one in five men over the age of 50 will break a bone due to poor bone health
•Is the cause of 230,000 fractures each year
•Causes the death of 1,150 people every month as a result of hip fractures
(Statistics from the National Osteoporosis Society).

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) is a basic guide to help us understand our minimum nutrient requirement for vitamins and minerals. To help prevent osteoporosis, the recommended RDA varies between 500mg and 1000mg for adults. During pregnancy, this amount increases to 1200 mg and for women over 45; calcium need is even greater at 1500 mg. For children aged 1 to 3 the daily allowance is 500mg; aged 4 to 8 800 mg and aged 9 to 18 1300mg.

If sufficient calcium is being consumed, why are the rates of osteoporosis so high?

It is a question of balance. If you consume plenty of calcium but you are not getting enough of the other minerals that work synergistically with calcium, your mineral stores will be thrown out of balance. Likewise, poor absorption can also be a factor. If you take calcium supplements for example, but have poor absorption, the chances are the calcium will either be excreted, making the supplements very expensive, or it will be stored in soft tissue instead of your bones. High calcium stores in soft tissue may cause inflammatory problems such as arthritis. Not good if you already have osteoporosis.

Calcium works in synergy with magnesium, vitamin A, C and D and Chlorophyll.

Magnesium stimulates the production of calcitonin, a hormone that prevents calcium being absorbed into soft tissue and puts it where it should be, in your bones.

Vitamins A and C are cofactors for the absorption of calcium whilst vitamin D is required for the utilisation of calcium. Vitamin D is known as the 'sunshine' vitamin but in countries like the UK, where sunshine is a rare treat, vitamin D supplementation is worth considering especially if you are vegan.

Chlorophyll is formed from the process of photosynthesis. At the heart of the chlorophyll molecule is magnesium. Thankfully, foods that contain chlorophyll act like vitamin D and thus help your body to regulate calcium.

To increase bone health the first thing is to ensure you are absorbing properly. You can do this by ensuring you get a sufficient amount of vitamin D, preferably from sunlight. Second, eat plenty of dark leafy greens, cereal grasses, seaweed and blue green algae (see table below) everyday, preferably raw.

The third recommendation is to move your body. Physical activity helps moderate calcium loss whilst at the same time helps to increase bone mass.

Avoid foods that contain oxalic acid prevents the absorption of calcium and other minerals. Plums, cranberries, rhubarb, spinach, beet greens and chard are the foods to look out for. Additionally, avoid or decrease consumption of soft drinks, coffee, alcohol, salt, refined sugar, meat and foods that contain solanine; (aubergine/ eggplant, peppers and potatoes). Other factors that inhibit absorption are smoking and use of other toxic drugs.

Is Gestational Diabetes Related to Type 2 Diabetes?

Bookmark and Share

Most expectant women look forward to pregnancy as a time filled with joy and wonder. Many are excited about spending time on fun activities like shopping for cute baby's clothes, decorating the baby's room or simply awaiting their baby's first kicks. However, for an increasing number of mothers-to-be, pregnancy also means that they have to face a serious health risk known as gestational diabetes.

Gestational diabetes (GDM) technically means "high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) first recognized during pregnancy". The symptoms of GDM are:

* extreme thirst
* hunger
* fatigue

but many women do not notice them. GDM usually resolves after giving birth but may recur in future pregnancies.

Gestational diabetes:

* occurs in between three to twelve per cent of all pregnancies
* alters the way your body uses glucose, the body's chief source of energy
* occurs between the twenty-fourth and twenty-eight week of pregnancy
* usually resolves after delivery but may recur in future pregnancies.

Knowing how sugar is normally processed in your body can help you understand how this diabetes occurs. After you eat:

* your body breaks down carbohydrates from foods into various sugar molecules
* one of these molecules is called glucose, and is usually absorbed into your bloodstream
* glucose cannot enter the cells without the help of insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas
* insulin facilitates the movement of glucose from you bloodstream into cells in your body where it can be used as energy

The exact mechanism behind gestational diabetes is still unknown but it is thought to occur because of hormonal changes that take place during pregnancy. These changes cause:

* your body to be less sensitive to insulin as the growing placenta secretes hormones that can block the insulin your pancreas normally makes
* this then forces your pancreas to work harder and make three times as much insulin as usual
* when your pancreas is no longer able to keep up with the higher demand your blood sugar levels rise

How is gestational diabetes treated?

The treatment goal is to keep blood sugars in the normal range and, as it usually follows the form of type 2 diabetes, it can be managed through diet and self-monitoring of your blood sugars. Your health care provider will teach you how to self-monitor, modify your diet, and exercise properly.

Recent research though has shown that only one third of pregnant mothers with this form of diabetes were able to control their blood sugar levels through diet and self-monitoring, therefore insulin may be necessary.

After giving birth, your health care provider may recommend regular testing of your fasting blood sugar level. Why? Because within five to fifteen years of the pregnancy, ten to fifty per cent of women who had GDM develop 2 diabetes.

In some cases, gestational diabetes really reveals type 1 or type 2 diabetes during pregnancy. If you have type 2 in your family, you are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes in the future after having gestational diabetes.

As pregnancy can mask the symptoms of low blood sugar levels, you cannot rely on how well you feel. Self monitoring your blood sugars will help you to keep your levels in the range advised by your health care provider.

Will Exercise Reduce Your Weight and Blood Sugar Levels?

Bookmark and Share

It's more than likely, one of the first things your health care provider told you to do when he confirmed your diagnosis of type 2 diabetes, was to "lose weight". And maybe what followed was "get some exercise". The truth is physical exercise can make the difference between:

* losing weight and not losing weight
* blood sugar control and out of control blood sugar levels
* requiring insulin injections and not requiring insulin injections

What actually is the importance of exercise in type 2 diabetes?

Physical exercise is effective medicine against:

* insulin resistance (this is the inability of insulin to escort sugar into your cells)
* being overweight
* type 2 diabetes because it builds muscles, increases the percentage of muscle in your body and decreases body fat

The more you build up your muscles, the more effective is your body's response to insulin and insulin's ability to keep your blood sugar levels within a normal range. Research shows that even if you are out of shape, stepping up your physical exercise program, even a little, will improve your body's ability to process carbohydrates.

Let's look at how to get started:

* visit your health care provider just to make sure you can kick off with your exercise plan
* work out what your exercise needs are
* what time of day would be the most likely for you to stick with? Write it in your daily schedule, make it a habit
* what do you like doing? Even if it's watching TV you can work that into your exercise plan

Walking is one of the best forms of regular physical activity. Now it may be frowned on by fitness fanatics but it is always available. You can walk at low, moderate or high intensity levels depending on what works for you.

Why not:

* start your day with a walk around the block
* take a stroll during your meal break
* park your car a block further back from your work or where you shop and walk the extra distance
* walk up stairs rather than take the elevator

Gardening, bicycling, dancing and swimming can all be included in your physical activity program. The bottom line is to incorporate it into your daily living plan.

If you decide to follow a formal fitness program:

* always warm up before, and cool down after you exercise
* to prevent a drastic change in your blood sugar level, it is wise to monitor your levels before, during and after exercise to prevent hypoglycemia, especially if you are taking insulin

Any time during your exercise program your feel weak, stop and check your blood sugar levels. Eat or drink a carbohydrate snack if your blood sugar goes way below the normal level. 63 mg/dl (3.5 mmol/)l or less is associated with signs and symptoms of hypoglycemia in most people.

The Mayo Clinic recommends:

* at a level of 100/mg/dl (5.6 mmol) ... exercise may be dangerous and you would need to eat some carbohydrates
* 100 to 250 mg/dl (5.6 to 13.9 mmol/l) is the ideal range for when exercise is the most beneficial.

Does exercise help with weight loss? Yes it does, although it may not be dramatic at first. Exercise and changes in what you eat will lead to successful weight loss and lower blood sugar levels. Overall your blood sugars will remain lower and more stable.

The best gift you can give yourself is to get your type 2 diabetes under control and to feel great. Learning all you can about type 2 diabetes will help do the trick. You are welcome to download my free E-Book by clicking here now: Answers to Your Questions ... it's based on questions diabetics like yourself have asked me during the past twelve months.

Low Sugar Desserts

Bookmark and Share

Being a diabetic and a lover of sweets can be quite difficult. If you are a diabetic, then you know about managing your diabetes with low sugar and carbohydrate foods. Well, in order to combat this problem, I will list a few low sugar desserts that I eat myself.

Always remember to consult your doctor before trying any new desserts or any foods for that matter in order to confirm that it will work with your diabetes. First of all, many ice cream companies have substituted some of their products with splenda, making them sugar free and low in carbohydrates. These low sugar desserts are great tasting, maybe even as good as the real thing. The key to controlling diabetes and having diabetic desserts is to eat in moderation. If you are a diabetic, then you are probably well aware of this idea. So when I do occasionally treat myself to a diabetic dessert, I always eat small portions. Other great tasting, low sugar desserts include sugar free chocolate.

Many chocolate companies, including some of the big name companies, have made their products in a sugar free form. This is great because now there is a sugar free dessert to have on the holidays. Another product that works with my diabetes is cool whip. Next time you are in a grocery store, check out the nutritional facts on cool whip. If I am correct, you will be surprised at how little sugar and carbs that it has. THis is great for me because cool whip tastes great.

The Relationship Between Hormones and Aging

Bookmark and Share

People wonder why they age. Indeed, it is a personal dilemma: the causes of aging and how to prevent or slow down the process as much as possible. Thanks to several achievements in science, however, people are now educated as why and how their bodies age.

Going into the core of the issues, we then find out that it is the action of hormones that are causing both the body's development as well as its deterioration associated with the process of aging.

What Are Hormones?

Hormones are substances that are secreted or produced by the body. They are responsible, starting with puberty, for the body's growth and changes. Even when the growth spurt is over, hormones are still produced by the body to perform other functions like managing the body's immune system, controlling the body's metabolism, overseeing the death and regeneration of the body's cells.

You can see now that hormones are the most important substances in our body. Continued production of hormones make several things possible like quickly healing any damage to body's cells, especially skin cells. The more hormones there are in the body, the faster the body's response to any damage.

An Explanation about Aging

Hormones are also responsible for the process of aging. Aging occurs when the body starts slowing down on its hormone production. As explained earlier, the presence of hormones in our body allow for the body's fast reaction to cell damage and deterioration. If there are fewer hormones in the body, the equilibrium between cell regeneration and death is tipped.

You can see now the relationship between hormones and aging. The reason why people's skin wrinkle - a common manifestation of aging - is that there are fewer hormones in the body to signal cell regeneration to keep the skin smooth and supple. The decline in hormone production is also directly related to the impairments that come along with aging like memory loss, lesser efficiency of the immune system and many others.

Preventing Aging

Solving the problem of aging is easy as adding one and one. The culprit has now been exposed. Since hormone production is responsible for the onset of aging, one can also conclude that regaining the levels of hormone production to match that of your younger years can slow down or defeat the process of aging altogether.

People in the past are in the mercy of the aging process, because there has not been anything they could do. Today, however, there are now hormonal supplements that can be used as anti-aging treatments. This is all thanks to tireless research by scientists and pharmaceutical companies.

There is more than one type of hormonal supplements available. There essentially three types of hormone treatments. These synthetic hormones are the following:

Human Growth Hormone. HGH is commonly used in anti-aging treatments for the body. This boosts the total production of hormones in the body to slow down aging.

DMAE 2. DMAE2 is intended to boost the brain's capabilities and to keep it functioning healthily.

DHEA. This type of hormone was formulated to improve the body's metabolism.

Benefits of Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) For Men

Bookmark and Share

Reversing the process of aging is almost impossible. However, with the advent of biotechnological advancement, hormone replacement therapy for a younger & healthier body helps improve life for men who're into their middle age and beyond.

Sexual hormones see a steady downfall with increase in age in incidence and quantity for both genders. So far, however, the reduction in sex hormones has been considered crucial only in women, making them resort to Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) during their menopause, to help them alleviate drastic menopausal symptoms such as osteoporosis, hot flashes, etc.

In distinction, hormone-replacement therapy (MHRT) for men has rarely been approved for fit, elder men. Current proof advocates that men might be able to stay trimmer, well-built, more contented, and virile for a higher duration of time if they consumed supplements to compensate for the testosterone that is lost as a result of aging.

Testosterone-replacement therapy has been put to test in various groups, and its impact is very evident especially in an overall improvement in functionality and well being. There have been inadequate scientific research of its lasting effects and experts remain worried that hormone supplements might increase the threat of the onset of prostate cancer and cardiovascular disease.

The consumption of testosterone by aging men, better perceived as male hormone replacement therapy and more specifically, androgen replacement therapy, has captured the interest of the medical community as well as lay people for the past ten years or more. Although information of the probable advantages and threats of male Androgen Replacement Therapy is greater than before, there is still a good deal that needs to be found out. Though there are a considerable amount of possible benefits of male Androgen Replacement and statistics regarding the irrefutable impacts of such substitution have built up, but so far there have not been any large scale trials of this therapy.

Being the chief masculinizing hormone (androgen), testosterone stimulates bone and muscle growth and promotes development of male genitalia.

During the onset of puberty in young males, responding to an indicator from the hypothalamus in the brain, the pituitary gland induces specific cells in the testicles to augment the amount of testosterone production in the body. This hormonal rush brings about sex drive and sperm production, induces acne, facial and pubic hair, and cracks the voice. Testosterone is produced women as well but not to the extent to which it is produced in men.

In grown up men, the testicles create about seven milligrams of testosterone on a day to day basis, with production normally being elevated in the early morning than at other time of the day.

What to Look For When Selecting an Anti Aging Treatment Center

Bookmark and Share

Anti Aging treatment is best when taken at an Anti Aging Treatment Center. Home remedies also work, however they cannot be compared with professional treatment offered at an Anti aging treatment center. These days, a lot of anti-aging centers are popping up. How is it that one should go about choosing the right anti-aging center?

The parameters that one should look at while choosing the right treatment center need to be apt and appropriate, and must cater to one's specific needs. It's probably impossible to point out a certain anti-aging clinic as the best one in the whole anti aging industry. This article however will help you choose the right one for your needs.

A plethora of Anti-Aging Treatment centers offer professional treatment to help rejuvenate the skin, body and bring about a complete feeling of rejuvenation and well being. However, one must look at the center's holistic approach to healing. The center should offer Rejuvenation Programs, Beauty Therapies, Detox Treatments, cure for chronic problems like obesity, arthritis, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, skin disease and more. First of all one must be familiar with the various steps involved in this process. Treatment centers that offer organic or natural treatments as compared to synthetic and allopathic treatments should be preferred, for the very fact that natural products are less harsh on the skin and body on the whole.

The most important aspect to be looked at is the credibility and the experience of the staff. The center should have received positive reviews for a while, and must have the necessary infrastructure along with having been established for a considerable and substantial period of time. The popular anti-aging concept has a lot to do with 'looking' younger and hence the skin plays one of the most important roles. Ensure that the Skin care department is thoroughly professional and have researched their products thoroughly. The skin care should protect, restore and nourish your skin and have lasting effects on anti aging. The anti aging skin care treatments should have an effective concentration of clinically proven facial rejuvenation ingredients. They must follow a customized skin care routine with a layering that is customized for each individual's requirements and skin type.

Then comes the anti aging products and ingredients. Most anti-aging products already have supplementary vitamins. These are Vitamins C, D, E and K which are indispensable in protecting the skin from deficiencies, by way of healing wounds, smoothing scars and intensification of the immune system. Several vitamins are antioxidants which fight against free radicals in the body.

The center should offer an all round approach to anti aging ranging from detox, diet plan, supplements, massages, ayurveda and other holistic therapies, exercise, and psychological counseling as well. Doctors and staff need to be well trained and experienced and the center should have appropriate certification.

Cholesterol Screening

Bookmark and Share

You may have heard an opinion that doctors should stop testing or screening their patients for cholesterol. Why after all these years of talking about and studying cholesterol are doctors still arguing about who should have their cholesterol measured? Let's briefly go into the history behind this "controversy."

Conventional medical wisdom - based upon many different studies from all over the world conducted over the last several decades - is that high cholesterol levels are very strongly associated with risk of heart disease. Based upon this circumstantial evidence alone, however, we can not say for sure that lowering cholesterol will decrease the risk of heart disease. But, thanks to other studies specifically designed to measure effects of lowering cholesterol, we can now say definitively that lowering cholesterol does indeed decrease the risk of heart attack. This is especially true in people who have had one heart attack already; in fact, most doctors agree that people with heart disease should be treated to lower their cholesterol, cholesterol screening.

The controversy about cholesterol screening has centered around the issue of using medication to lower cholesterol in people who don't already have known heart disease. This is known as "primary prevention" because its purpose is to prevent that first heart attack. Until recently, the clinical information concerning this topic was incomplete: lowering cholesterol decreased heart attacks but not deaths from all causes and therefore its value in this setting was not completely established. However, a recent study using pravachol, one of the "statin" drugs (a class of drugs that powerfully and safely lower cholesterol ) demonstrated that both heart attacks and deaths from all causes were substantially less in persons who took the medication for five years. Therefore, it seems clear that if you are at high risk of developing heart disease and have an elevated cholesterol level that you can't control with diet, you will probably benefit from treatment to lower your cholesterol.

The recommendations about when to use medication to lower cholesterol were issued by an expert panel from the National Institutes of Health and have been endorsed by virtually all the major medical organizations, including the American Heart Association, cholesterol screening.

So where is the controversy? The controversy started when a group of physicians associated with an organization called the American College of Physicians issued guidelines recommending that cholesterol screening not be done on healthy people. The concern was that many doctors use drugs to lower cholesterol in people who shouldn't receive drug treatment. If anything, available information suggests that doctors are still not recommending cholesterol medication enough, even for patients with established heart disease. In any case, these physicians developed their own guidelines, which recommended that physicians stop screening for cholesterol levels in healthy men under 35 and women under 45, as well as in all "older" people over 65.

There are several problems with this recommendation. First, there are things you can do short of taking medication to lower your cholesterol and decrease your risk of heart disease, but only if you know you have a problem. For example, if you know that you have high cholesterol, you might be more inspired to eat better, exercise more, and lose weight.

Second, the process that causes heart disease starts well before age 35, in fact, it starts in the teen years. Why wait until it has already established itself, then try to reverse the process? Finally, there are clearly people with very high cholesterol levels who do need medication but who would never know that they had a high cholesterol unless they had been screened.

Many experts have commented on the curious fact that these recommendations came at a time when the evidence linking cholesterol- lowering with decreased heart disease risk is coming faster than ever. In fact, most major professional organizations, including the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association, have denounced these recommendations, cholesterol screening research.

The bottom line: experts agree that having your cholesterol measured is one of the cheapest, most reliable ways to determine your risk of heart disease and can point you toward concrete ways to decrease that risk. Don't be confused by the "controversy;" regardless of your age, you are potentially at risk for heart disease and knowing your cholesterol level can help.

Many pacemaker patients will tell you not to worry about pacemaker surgery. The implant procedure has become routine and common today. In many cases, less than an hour of heart pacemaker surgery is required.

Many pacemaker implants can be done as an outpatient. Most patients receive a local anesthetic and remain awake during the pacemaker implant procedure.

Some kinds of pacemaker implants may require general anesthesia and a brief hospital stay. If hospitalization is required, you will likely be home in just a few days. Please ask your physician for specific details.

This section has suggestions about what a patient generally needs to do before pacemaker surgery, information on where pacemakers and pacing leads are implanted in the body, what happens during the procedure, and what to expect afterward.

This information is general. Your medical condition, age, and other factors determine the type of pacemaker and lead to be implanted. Please, refer to your physician to review the factors used to determine the appropriate lead and heart pacemaker and for specific instructions before and after pacemaker surgery.

Where a heart Pacemaker is Implanted.

The location of where a heart pacemaker is placed (or implanted) depends upon the patient's medical condition, age, and lifestyle. Heart pacemakers can be implanted on the left or right side of the chest, or in a place of the abdominal area. The pacemaker is generally implanted after the leads have been implanted. The type of anesthesia and length of hospital stay depend on the patient's medical condition.

Food and Lower Cholesterol - Powerful Natural Ways to Lower Lipid Levels

Are you looking for a way to lower your cholesterol without having to use medication? Are you aware of the proven connection between food and lower cholesterol levels? If not, understanding this connection is the first step to improving your health.

You see, it has been shown in many different studies that certain foods reduce high cholesterol very effectively. As a matter of fact there is a growing number of doctors who are recommending their patients get off of cholesterol medication and begin making certain changes to their diet that have been shown to lower cholesterol levels.

The reason for this is twofold:

1.) The longer an individual stays on statin medication, the greater the likelihood of them experiencing damaging side effects becomes.

2.) Foods such as vegetables, fruit, nuts and whole grains are so effective at reducing high cholesterol that this is really the only approach that makes sense. And do you know what the side effects are? These are the very foods that give you more energy, help improve your cognitive abilities, and can even extend your lifespan.

So, what makes these foods so effective? They are actually two substances found in cholesterol lowering foods that you should be aware of. First of all, foods that lower cholesterol contain large quantities of soluble fiber which has been proven to eliminate cholesterol from the intestines before it has a chance to be absorbed into the bloodstream.

Plant sterols are another natural substance found in these foods that reduce high cholesterol. They accomplish this by blocking the absorption of cholesterol into the body. This is due to the fact that sterols apparently compete with cholesterol for absorption.

For many individuals, the idea of nuts lowering cholesterol doesn't seem to make sense. This is due to the fact that nuts contain a high fat content. However the fats that are found in nuts are actually the essential fatty acids that support balanced cholesterol readings and are required for many functions in the body. Nuts are actually among the foods that contain the highest amounts of plant sterols.

This connection between food and lower cholesterol readings is critical. I encourage you to visit my website where I discuss the most effective foods and diets to reduce cholesterol levels.

Some of the more common factors are high blood pressure, high cholesterol, being overweight, smoking, family history, age, diabetes. Of course these are not all the signs bit it's a place to start.

Fortunately there are steps you can take to lower your risk. Obviously there are some that you don't have any control over such as family history and diabetes.

* Start by eating healthier. Things low in saturated fat, cholesterol and salt.
* Figure your ideal weight and try to maintain it. Easier said than done I know. There are plenty of tools online to help you figure out what you should weight according to your height. Search for BMI or Body Mass Index.
* This should be obvious but don't smoke. Nothing good can come from it.
* Don't drink alcohol in excess. This can raise your blood pressure.
* Do the deed. Exercise that is. 30 minutes a day or at least a few times per week. You don't have to get crazy with it but do something. Walk, ride a bike, run, lift weights, anything physical.
* Have your doctor check your blood pressure and cholesterol on a regular basis. If one or both of these are high the doctor may give you medicine for it. Also see if you may have diabetes. This is not a complete list and is no way intended to take the place of seeing your doctor. He/She can help you map out a plan that best suit your needs.

Foods Low in Cholesterol - Discover a Natural Solution to High Cholesterol Readings

If you are committed to a healthy lifestyle, the foods low in cholesterol are something you're probably interested in. However, are you aware that cholesterol is essential for the proper functioning of the human body? As in so many cases, it is an excess of high-fat, high cholesterol foods that creates the problem.

In order to maintain healthy cholesterol levels, a balanced diet that includes many foods to lower LDL cholesterol is essential. I have found it helpful to follow a structured diet plan that is designed around foods low in cholesterol, such as fruits and vegetables as well as daily servings of healthy fats such as those found in nuts and fish.

A thoroughly enjoyable cholesterol lowering recipe that I enjoy is grilled salmon served over a bed of spinach. A great way to start out your day is with a bowl of oatmeal that has crushed walnuts mixed in. These are all great foods to lower LDL cholesterol and raise HDL.

You will want to eliminate meats that are high in saturated fats (high-fat foods are typically also high in cholesterol) such as beef and pork, especially bacon. Turkey and chicken are great, high nutrient foods that can be prepared in some very enjoyable, cholesterol-lowering recipes. I have found that ground turkey makes a great substitute for ground beef.

These are the types of things you need to keep in mind as you seek to reduce high cholesterol. Foods low in cholesterol are only part of the solution. The most effective foods for high cholesterol are those that contain high amounts of fiber such as vegetables, fruits, and whole grains.

I invite you to visit my website where I discuss the best foods to lower LDL cholesterol as well as those that contain high amounts of cholesterol that you should avoid. The results you obtain from this approach to lowering high cholesterol readings will surprise you.

Type Two Diabetes Diet - What You Need to Know

Bookmark and Share

People who have been diagnosed as having type 2 diabetes need to know that it is very important to try and maintain a stable diet, make sure they are getting the optimum amount of exercise, try to lose weight and, if they can, try to stop smoking.

Trying to stick to a diet that aids in keeping type 2 diabetes under strict control is vitally important to guaranteeing a long, and for the most part healthy, life. Therefore, it is crucial to mention that foods which tend to be full of carbohydrates can have a direct affect on glucose levels in the blood. And as it is vitally important for type 2 diabetics to keep their blood glucose levels at low levels; trying to limit the intake of foods that are high in carbohydrates is a must.

It is not difficult at all to figure out which foods can be high in carbohydrates; anything full of sugar is also full of carbohydrates. Examples of this would be most bread types, chocolate, biscuits, sweets and cakes, so to avoid any possible issues type 2 diabetes sufferers should try to avoid such foods. This type of carbohydrate is known as a simple carbohydrate.

There are plenty of other foods that are high in carbohydrates, but unlike the above, these are known as complex carbohydrates and are ultimately better than carbohydrates derived from sugary foods. The reason for this is that the body breaks these down into glucose at a much slower rate than that of simple carbohydrates. Foods high in complex carbohydrates include bran, wheatgerm, maize, barley and oatmeal. Pasta's, brown rice and potatoes are also a good source.

As well as eating foods that contain complex carbohydrates, type 2 diabetes sufferers should also eat plenty of fruit, vegetables and protein (from either lean cuts of meat, eggs and dairy products) to maintain a healthy, varied balance to their diet.

Another important thing to remember besides eating a well balanced healthy diet low in simple carbs is to exercise. Exercise plays a vital role in managing type 2 diabetes and things like walking, jogging, gym sessions and even simple activities like playing with the kids is conducive to helping the body's sensitivity to insulin.

Do you want to reverse diabetes? Drug free? And within four weeks? If you have answered yes to each of these questions, then read on. Can you imagine your blood sugar worries consigned to the past, or your doctor letting you know you can gradually reduce your insulin dosage until you can do without it - forever? Think of the peace of mind you can have in the knowledge that you can avoid all the pain, suffering and any unnecessary expense by getting to the root cause of your diabetes naturally.

Lower LDL Cholesterol Diet - The Most Powerful Approach to Reducing Cholesterol Levels

Bookmark and Share

While it is extremely unfortunate, the majority of Americans will at some point in their life face the need to lower their cholesterol levels. What many individuals do not realize is that with the use of a lower LDL cholesterol diet it is relatively easy to support healthy cholesterol readings.

For the vast majority of individuals the cause of high cholesterol readings is not genetic but rather is related to the typical American diet that contains extremely high levels of saturated fat and so few foods that lower cholesterol, like vegetables and nuts.

What I am trying to point out here is that reducing your high cholesterol naturally is not difficult to do. However it will require some discipline on your part. You see, the effectiveness of a diet to lower cholesterol is a well proven fact.

A recent article in US news and world report discussed a doctor who found that he was unable to tolerate the side effects of the statin medication that he was prescribing for his own patients. As a result, he made the necessary changes in his diet and increased the amount of exercise he was receiving. Surprisingly, his cholesterol readings came down by more than what most of his patients were obtaining using medication.

So what are you waiting for? If you've found that you have high cholesterol, begin a lower LDL cholesterol diet today and see how quickly your lipid readings return to normal. The fact is that raising HDL cholesterol is more difficult than reducing LDL levels. With the best cholesterol lowering foods it is easy to improve your cholesterol ratios.

Most OPC's, Resveratrol, and Other Antioxidant Supplements Are Useless If Not Individually Sealed

Bookmark and Share

Most OPC's, Resveratrol and other Antioxidants are useless if they're packaged in an environment susceptible to oxygen, thus oxidation. That means if you buy an antioxidant supplement in pill or capsule form and the pill is not individually sealed in a blister pack, you're likely getting sold a bill of goods.

The reason is simple - in fact it's almost too simple. OPC's and Antioxidants are good for our bodies because they neutralize free radicals. That's it! That's the only reason. Don't get me wrong, that's a very good thing. It's like saying "wearing a seat belt is only good because it saves lives". That's still important, right?

Remember the molecule? Well both free radicals and antioxidants are molecules. Both of these molecules have a nucleus, protons and electrons. One is highly unstable if it loses an electron - that's the free radical. When they are unstable they bounce, steal and damage other healthy cells.

Antioxidants, on the other hand, are not unstable when an electron is missing. They all have an extra electron. So when you marry a free radical with an antioxidants like OPC - you get harmony. No more cellular damage and ultimately better healthy.

So if you buy OPC's or Resveratrol and antioxidants in a canister of air, the free radicals in the air will be neutralized by the antioxidants in the unsealed capsules or pills. Then when you ingest them, you're getting nothing. The free radical is stable and the antioxidant is just another molecule.

Stick to individually sealed packets, blister packs or some other air-tight container: otherwise you're buying what they put into the container, not what comes out.

Boosting Your Immunity

As we enter flu season, it seems like a good idea to start eating the things that are really going to help you to stay active and strong. Here are some of the best things for your immune system. Taking a proactive approach will help you to have a better chance of fighting off the germs you come in contact with this season.

# Surprisingly, lean beef is a great food for you to eat when you're trying to build your immune system. It's a good source of zinc, which helps your white blood cells to develop. Protein in general will help your body to build a healthy immune system.

# Vitamin A is good for your skin, which is, of course, your first line of defense against most things. Some of the best things to include in your diet to get this are orange vegetables - sweet potatoes, carrots, squash and pumpkins.

# Eat yogurt, particularly if you've already been sick and are taking anti-biotics. Yogurt helps to give your body the good bacterias it needs to stave off the germs that cause diarrhea, among other things.

# Avoid sugar and coffee. Both of these weaken your immune system and caffeine in particular robs your body of minerals that it needs, as well as increasing the speed at which you become dehydrated. If you insist on continuing to drink caffeine, add more water to your day to counteract the diarrhetic.

# Eat lots of raw fruits and vegetables. This is the best way to get minerals, anti-oxidants, fiber, etc. in your diet.

# Try adding lemons to your diet. This will restore a pH balance that encourages healthy bacteria and discourages viruses.

The Importance of Clinical Trials in Wrinkle Creams

Bookmark and Share

Wrinkle creams promise fast and immediate results. The television and magazine ads are everywhere and it can really be confusing as to which ones to consider buying. Wrinkle cream clinical trials are provided by the companies they represent. When looking at wrinkle cream products, it is always a good idea to see just how many people have actually tried the product and rated its effectiveness. Clinical trials performed in laboratory settings are sometimes just not good enough for the discriminating consumer. With the economy in a downward slope, consumers are becoming more and more cautious about the products that they buy. When choosing a wrinkle cream, for instance one would want to buy something that is reasonably priced, works on most skin types and what kind of lasting results were accomplished.

Clinical trials for wrinkle creams will give a lot of data about things like moisture control, fine line removal, removal of dark circles under the eyes, brown spot removal and so forth. Trials have been done when applying wrinkle cream to the skin and/or the eye area twice a day for a certain amount of time. These are broken down into timelines for which the researcher can determine the percentage of effectiveness in different stages - at one week, three to four weeks and up to six weeks or better using a particular product. Clinical trials also compare different eye and facial creams with each other using the above criteria to provide data to the consumer on which ones are the most effective.

What this means for the consumer is that by doing a little research on the product or products that we are interested in purchasing, we can get a better determination of which wrinkle creams have been tested not only in a lab setting but on people who have taken a trial and written their own testimonies as to what works and what doesn't, in general how much the product costs and if they would recommend it to everyone else. This is a simple but smart approach to finding out which wrinkle creams will work the best and last the longest. We all know that a wrinkle cannot disappear without surgery, but finding your best wrinkle cream can help slow the process down without reverting to surgical measures to get the youngest, best looking skin ever.

Mark Robbins has been reviewing and examining the best wrinkle cream options on the market. His expertise in weeding out bogus hype as well as determining the truly effective creams has made his opinions highly sought after by consumers in the market. Many people comment that they only buy products that Mark recommends.

Most people who failed in increasing muscle mass forgot how important knowledge is in the process.

If you want to make a difference and succeed, it is essential that you understand at the very least the following principles so that you can get ready to learn how to increase muscle mass in the right way.

1 - What body building magazines and guidelines convey have one thing in common - drugs. Some of these magazines and guidelines will give you a mind wrecking 12-24 reps for every body part. But, the truth is, this is impossible to do unless you incorporate in your routine the intake of drugs to have speedy recovery and body repair. If you increase muscle mass just using this information, you are in for exhaustion, dependence on drugs and further failure.

2 - If you have reached the limit of your training by 90%, this is the only time you can take in supplements. During the initial phase of your training, the only thing you need to take in is correct nutrition and/or diet. Your lifestyle comes next.

3 - Every month, your body is only able to produce about 1-2 pounds of muscle volume without the glycogen and water. Should it Be Reasons Or Motivations For Losing Weight?

Bookmark and Share

Is there a difference between a reason and a motivation for losing weight? A reason is really an "either - or" situation and can be a very distinctive reason for doing something. When it's a case of "either lose the weight or you will be dead in six months" is a pretty good reason to get motivated but for some people it's still not enough to actually motivate them.

I have concluded that motivation comes from our emotions rather than from our logical reasoning part of our brain. Emotions are more of a motivator, more of a driving force behind our actions than reasoning. We humans are extremely complex and we each need to understand what our personal driving factors are that motivate us individually.

I'm not going to go into a thesis here - there are plenty of others who have done that and done it far better than me. But I want to bring home the importance to you of knowing yourself and making the right decision for you. With this information as your driving force; it motivates you into the stratosphere and losing weight will be no chore at all. You will be considerably more energised and actually really, seriously enjoy the new you emerging. It's like coming awake from a long, bad-dream night to find the sun shining through a window.

Because someone else says to you that "you have to..." isn't what I would term a motivating force, would you? Yet how many times has your partner said that to you in one context or another?

When reason combines with motivation to become the driving force behind losing weight a person's drive to succeed becomes unstoppable.
